Five Ways to Use Downtime Wisely

Content writing has become more than just a hobby, it is now a part of our culture. For those who did not have time to learn a new hobby, skill or even take time out to watch the news, content writing has definitely filled that void.

However, the mind needs a break. Or the body has decided to not crank out any more work for a while. Avoiding panic is easier said than done but if the time is used wisely, a person can become a better writer. Or at least a more productive one without spending a lot of your hard-earned money!

Invest in Study Guides

These little guys are sold at chain and college bookstores as well as online and cost around $5 each. And they're not just about academic subjects anymore. Most cover the basics of marketing, e-commerce, cooking, podcasting and web design. You can also use these to sharpen writing skills such as punctuation, grammar or business writing. Good for the person on the run who's watching their money as study guides are both laminated and portable.

Tighten Up Old Articles

It is best to keep a copy of all articles, even those you don't own the rights to. With one or more of the following - thesaurus, dictionary, vocabulary builder (these are sometimes sold as a set of 3), or if your funds allow, invest in an article spinner. Depending on the subject, your articles can be re-purposed to include research or new facts or even targeted to another audience. If submitting to a content site, make sure it is not the same article with just a few words changed. Otherwise, it may not pass Copyscape or other duplication software. used by content companies.

Create Multiple Venues to Submit Work

Hubpages is not the only place that pays via Google Adsense. There are others but view them carefully to see if your work might be a match as a few are theme-based. For example, your low-fat Brown Betty recipe may not have much luck on Technorati but Examiner.com may have contributor spot for you. If you haven't started that personal blog, get on it. If you have a personal blog, do you have a Google Adsense account?

Try New Forms of Writing

Do you like to discuss movies, books or sports? Have you wanted to write a cookbook or get into creative writing? Are you confident of getting noticeable page views and positive feedback? If not, there are many resources that provide free or low-cost online training. Some places provide training, such as how to write in AP or Chicago style, upon acceptance. Otherwise, you can create a notebook (my recommendation is a composition notebook) and write drafts on the topic you would like to try out.

Take a Page From Life

Does your mother-in-law get on your nerves? Hate your boss? Do you fantasize about the neighborhood barista? Sometimes it can be therapeutic to create a fantasy world, even if it's published only in a personal diary. As long as there is no invasion of one's privacy, confidential company secrets are not revealed and no one can sue for slander, go for it. Many famous authors weave parts of their life with fiction all the time.
